From Beach Cleanup to Community Education: What Sakumono Taught Us About Waste and Responsibility

The Elixir team gathered at Sakumono Beach to mark World Environment Day and World Ocean Day not with a statement, but with action.

We came prepared with gloves, tools, and a plan. But what we didn’t expect was the energy that poured out of the white van from our collaborators, the incredible @buzstopboys. We anticipated six volunteers. Instead, the doors kept opening, and one after another, team members stepped out and got straight to work. No pause. No instructions. Just immediate, infectious action. It moved us. Even after they had left, our team kept going.

Together, we cleared the beach and arranged for responsible waste collection and recycling. But as much as we removed rubbish, we gained something more valuable: perspective.

The Buzstopboys reminded us that ocean waste doesn’t begin on the shore. It begins in our communities. In our gutters. In our habits.

When plastic waste clogs open drains and is dumped in streets, it doesn't disappear.

Rain carries it into storm drains, into lagoons, and eventually into the ocean. This creates a ripple seffect that touches every part of life:

  • Urban flooding and damaged roads

  • Stagnant water that breeds mosquitoes and spreads malaria and cholera

  • Polluted lagoons that harm marine life

  • Disrupted fishing livelihoods and contaminated food sources

  • Littered beaches that make coastal areas unsafe for recreation

  • A decline in tourism and local economic activity

As we worked, one challenge became crystal clear: even with all our energy and intention, we lacked infrastructure. There were no public waste bins. No disposal points. No system to support volunteers or visitors who want to do the right thing.

That’s why Elixir is now looking to collaborate. We believe that providing proper waste bins along Ghana’s coastline is a necessary first step toward more sustainable waste solutions. We are starting with Sakumono, and we’re reaching out to local partners, ministries, waste management groups, and anyone with the resources or insight to help make this a reality.

What’s Next

We’re proud of what we achieved that day. But we know our work is just beginning. This was never about one cleanup. It’s about starting something that lasts.

As we’ve grown within Ghana’s dynamic ecosystem, we remain committed to giving back to the nation that made us. We reinvest our success by training aspiring professionals, mentoring the next generation of leaders, and supporting local impact projects like this one.

If you or someone you know can support our effort to place sustainable waste bins along the coast or improve community waste management systems, we invite you to reach out.

Together, we can do more than clean a beach. We can change how we care for our communities; from the gutters to the ocean.

Thank you @buzstopboys for your spirit, your energy, and your powerful reminder that real change starts upstream.

And even with volunteers ready to help, there were no bins, no disposal points, no proper infrastructure.

That’s why we’re looking to collaborate.
We want to help provide bins along the coast, starting with Sakumono.
If you know someone in that space: waste management, local leadership, recycling, kindly reach out to us.

This is how we give back to the country that shaped us.
This is Elixir in action.
